In 1986, Ed Elmore and Jim Breshears met Steve Hanson as he showcased the traditional craft of hand hewing logs using his great-grandfather's E.C. Simmons broad axe, with the idea of constructing an 1800s cabin on Kaysinger Bluff.

In 1993, when floodwaters killed White Oak trees at Long Shoal Marina, the Corps of Engineers donated these trees, leading to the initiation of the 1800’s cabin project. The Ed Elmore cabin was started in 1996 nestled in the woods just to the left of the walking trail to the Hooper House.
